LICENSING
One of the main duties of the SIA is the compulsory licensing of individuals working in specific sectors of the private security industry. Our remit covers the United Kingdom.
Whether or not an individual requires a licence is determined by the role that is performed and the activity that is undertaken. These are described fully in Section 3 and Schedule 2 of the Private Security Industry Act 2001 (as amended).
The activities defined as licensable by the Act are:
PROCESSING TIMES
We aim to process 80% of all our licence applications within 40 working days. For applications from UK and EEA nationals our target is to process 85% of licence applications within 33 working days.
In December 2009:
- 94% of all properly completed licence applications were processed within 40 working days
- 91% of properly completed licence applications from UK and EEA nationals were processed within 33 working days
LICENSING STASTICS
- Number of security qualifications held - the number of recognised security qualifications held by individuals eligible to apply for a licence in the given sector (as listed on the awarding bodies' qualifications database). Individuals may hold more than one qualification, may not need to be licensed by the SIA, or may not have remained working in the industry. The number of qualifications held is not a reflection of the number of individuals working in the private security industry.
- Valid licences - the number of currently valid licences.
- Licences revoked - the number of licences revoked. Numbers shown relate to licences that have actually been revoked and do not include those currently going through the revocation process.
- Applications refused - the number of licence applications refused. Numbers shown relate to applications that have actually been refused and do not include those currently going through the appeal process.
